Protein Powders Made Easy…

Protein PowderThis morning I was referred a question around protein powders, so I thought today I would share some thoughts on how to make good decisions when it comes to choosing a quality product that works best for you.

Let me start by saying that I am not endorsed by any company in this field, I am just a consumer like everyone else hoping to help out and make things a bit easier to understand. I often have clients ask me questions about which one to use as there are many marketing tricks and gimmicks used in this competitive market.

There are many different types of protein powders available, whey, soy, egg and pea are common types just to name a few. Some people have allergies so it’s important to find one that works well with your body. Different protein powders can also serve different purposes like weight gain, post workout or in some instances meal replacement (for the record I don’t agree with this but have included this so you know what you are looking at).

I use a whey protein isolate powder after weight training and find it useful in assisting muscle growth, building strength and helping to retaining my shape. Post workout is the best time to take a fast absorbing whey protein.

Many supplement stores will be able to provide you with samples of different products to try, which is helpful as taste is very important and you don’t want to buy a 4kg tub without trying it first.

I also choose a whey protein isolate formula as this is the purest form of whey protein available.

When it comes to the ingredients, for me I try and keep it as simple as possible. I am looking for over 20 grams of protein and no more than 120 calories per 30g serve, preferably with a natural sweetener.

In summary I am looking for a powder that has the highest amount of protein by volume or by serve, that is low in carbohydrates and fats, that doesn’t have a list of ingredients as long as my arm and that tastes amazing.

For the record I find that ‘Gold Standard Double Chocolate 100% Whey Protein Isolate’ meets all of these needs and I also think its the best tasting product on the market.
