At about 1PM today, I did something I swore I would never do again – I booked myself into a spin class tomorrow morning!
It’s not that I am worried about my fitness levels or getting through the class, I just really personally dislike spin as an exercise even though I know it to be one of the best fat burning exercise there is.
I spend my days advising people about training and my normal advise would be to regularly do the exercise or classes that you enjoy as a way of staying motivated. For me running is a great release, HIIT sessions are the best and I really love to do weights, but for some reason I would rather pull my fingernails out than participate in a spin class.
There are times when more of the same training can have a negative effect and this is when you need to do what I did today, challenge yourself and step out of your comfort zone.
There is a great saying that ‘If it doesn’t challenge you it doesn’t change you’ which is very true and I think everyone needs to challenge themselves from time to time, especially those who exercise regularly and who might have hit a bit of a lull in their training.
For me that will mean jumping on a stationary bike at 7AM tomorrow morning, getting through the 45 mins of intense exercise and hopefully even feeling good about it afterwards!
So this weekend, change it up – do something that challenges you and is different to your normal training program, I promise it will be good for the soul.
